תַּעֲנִית, affliction, fast. Taan. 12ᵇ יחיד … ת׳ an individual that vowed to fast. Ib. ת׳ יחיד a private fast-day; ת׳ ציבור public fast. Ib. שמא ת׳ ציבור קבל עליו may-be he vowed a fast with the restrictions of a public fast. Ib. לווה אדם תַּעֲנִיתוֹ ופורע one may borrow his fast and pay it, i.e. one may break his private fast, and make up for it on another day. Ib. ת׳ חלום a fast on account of a bad dream. Ib.; Sabb. 11ᵃ יפה ת׳ לחלום וכ׳ fasting is as good to avert a bad dream as fire to consume flax.
