שָׁחַץ (v. חָצַץ II) 1) to divide, tear. Ab. d’R. N., 2ⁿᵈ vers., ch. XLIII (ed. Schechter, p. 122) שחץ שהוא שׁוֹחֵץ בפיו the lion is called shaḥats, because he tears with his mouth; Yalk. Prov. 959 שהוא מְשַׁחֵץ בשיניו (Pi.).—2) to divide off, separate.—Part. pass. שָׁחוּץ; pl. שְׁחוּצִים, שְׁחוּצִין a) separate, proud, aristocratic. Y. Sabb. VI, 8ᵃ top והאיש … ש׳ מותר but a man is allowed (to wear those ornaments which a woman is forbidden to wear on the Sabbath), because he is not ostentatious (and will not take them off to show them), v. שַׁחֲצָנִית. Cant. R. to IV, 8 (ref. to אריות ib.) מה הארי הזה ש׳ … ש׳ וגבורים וכ׳ (strike out וגבורים) as the lion is proud (keeping for himself), so were Sihon and Og proud (selfish) … they did not come to each other’s rescue; Yalk. ib. 988 מה הארי הזה שחק (corr. acc.).—b) [that which is to be kept off, cmp. רחק,] obscene. Yalk. Is. 264 אנשי … ש׳ היו the men of Jerusalem were obscene, v. שַׁחַץ I.

Sifré Num. 131 מלכות זו מתגאה ומִשְׁתַּחַצַת וכ׳ this proud and overweening government has only four provinces worthy of an empire &c.; Yalk. Num. 771; Yalk. Deut. 809. Ab. d’R. N. l. c. [read:] שחץ שהוא מִשְׁתַּחֵץ the lion is called shaḥats, because he is proud.
