שַׁחַץ I, [separation,] obscenity, abomination, disgrace. Sabb. 62ᵇ אנשי … אנשי ש׳ היו the men of Jerusalem were lovers of obscene talk; (Yalk. Is. 264 שחוצים). Pes. 3ᵇ ש׳ פסול (they found in him) obscenity which made him unworthy of the priesthood; (Rashi: pride). Tanḥ. Vaëra 9; Ex. R. s. 8 לך ועשה מי שעשה עצמו אלוה ש׳ בעולם go and make him that made himself a god an abomination in the world; ib. וכן … נעשה ש׳ בעולם and so Sennacherib prided himself, and became an abomination &c. Ib. אני ממלא … ומראה שַׁהֲצוֹ לבריות I fill the upper and the lower regions with him (his repute), and let people see his disgrace; Tanḥ. l. c. שבחן (corr. acc.). Ib. הקב"ה מראה ש׳ וכ׳ the Lord shows all men the disgrace of the proud; a. e.—Pl. שְׁחָצִים. Ib. (ref. to Job XLI, 26 בני שחץ) אלו הגיותנין … ש׳ בעולם this means the proud that make themselves gods: the Lord makes them abominations in the world.
