פָּצַל (b. h.; cmp. בצל) to split, peel.

    Hif. - הִפְצִיל 1) to split, divide. Bekh. VI, 5 (39ᵇ) היה … מַפְצִיל עצם Mish. (Bab. ed. מְפַצֵּל) if the top end (root) of the tail divides the bone (i.e. if the backbone is branched at the place where the tail begins; Rashi מפציל את העצם peels the backbone, i.e. if the end of the backbone is bare of skin and flesh). —2) to form branches, branch off. Yoma 29ᵃ מה אילה זו קרניה מַפְצִילוֹת לכאן ולכאן אף שחר זה מפציע וכ׳ as the antlers of the hind branch off this way and that way, so the light of dawn spreads &c.; (Yalk. Ps. 685 … מפוצלות … מְפַצֵּל וכ׳). Yoma l. c. כל זמן שמגדלת קרניה מפצילות as long as it grows, its antlers form additional branches every year; Yalk. l. c. —3) to form streaks, to wrinkle. Nidd. 47ᵃ (expl. משיכסיף) משיפְצִיל ראש החוטם (Ar. משיִפָּצֵל) when the skin of the central circle of the oblate part of the breast appears wrinkled.
