V, 2.—Part. pass. עִיר, pl. עִירִין, עִירֵי awake. Y. Ber. I, 2ᵈ עד כדון ברייתא ע׳ until then (the end of the first night-watch) men are awake. Snh. 29ᵇ ע׳ ושכבי ליהוי וכ׳ shall those awake and those asleep be witnesses against thee (i.e. wouldst thou say so within the hearing of &c.)?
