חָרַז

חָרַז, (b. h.) [to bore holes, to carry thread through a hole,]
חָרַז, to squeeze into. Cant. R. to I, 10 (ref. to בחרוזים ib.) שחוֹרְזִים צואריהם וכ׳ (not שחוזרין) who squeeze their necks (through window holes, open doors &c.) to hear the words of the Law (v. Yoma 35ᵇ; Ber. 6ᵇ; v. דּוּחֲקָא); Yalk. ib. 983 שהם חוזרים אחרי וכ׳ (read: חוֹרְזִים אחוֹרֵי).
חָרַז, to string. Ex. R. s. 20 ישב וח׳ וכ׳ he sat down and strung (assorting) the larger pearls separately &c.—Part. pass. חָרוּז, pl. חֲרוּזִים, חֲרוּזִין. Cant. R. l. c. [read:] אלו ע׳ זקנים שהיו חֲרוּזִים אחריהם כליניא וכ׳ (v. Yalk. l. c.) those are the seventy elders who were strung (arranged) behind them (Moses and Aaron) like a string of pearls.—Ḥull. 95ᵇ בחרוזין (Ar. חֲרִיזִים, noun) if the pieces of meat are strung together. Lam. R. to V, 13 ג׳ מאות … ח׳ וכ׳ three hundred children were found strung up on the branches of one tree.—Trnsf. to draw parallels between Biblical passages, to explain one passage by another. Cant. R. l. c. הייתי יושב וחוֹרֵז וכ׳ I was sitting and comparing verses of the Pentateuch, and Pentateuch with Prophets &c.—Ib. שהיו חוֹרְזִים וכ׳; Yalk. l. c. חוזרים (corr. acc.). Cant. R. l. c. שהן חֲרוּזוֹת וכ׳ which are strung together (illustrate one another).
