שְׁכִינָה, (שָׁכַן) royal residence, royalty. Lev. R. s. 2 בא ואראך כבודי ובית שְׁכִינָתִי וכ׳ (not ביתי; some ed. שכונתי) come, and I will show thee my honor and the house of my residence without thy mother; Yalk. Ez. 340 כבודי ובית שבניתי לאמך (corr. acc.). Lev. R. l. c. כלום פיחת כבודי ושכינתי has my honor or my royalty suffered (through thy mother’s absence)?; Yalk. l. c. כבודי או בית שבניתי לכם (corr. acc.).—Esp. Shechinah, Divine Presence, holy inspiration (v. Ex. XXV, 8, a. 22). Yoma 9ᵇ sq. אי נמי סליקו … לא הוה שריא ש׳ … אין הש׳ שורה וכ׳ even if all Jews had returned in Ezra’s days, the Sh. would not have dwelt in the second Temple, for it is written (Gen. IX, 27) …; the Sh. dwells only in the tents of Shem; Gen. R. s. 36. Ber. 6ᵃ לשלשה … שש׳ עמהם that when three sit as judges, the Sh. is with them. Sabb. 12ᵇ ש׳ למעלה וכ׳ the Sh. dwells over the headside of the sick man’s bed. Ib. 30ᵇ; Pes. 117ᵃ, v. עֲצֵבוּת. Meg. 29ᵃ בכל מקום שגלו ש׳ עמהן whithersoever they were exiled, the Sh. went with them.
