פְּעֵי פְּעֵי, פְּעָא, to cry, bleat, low. Targ. II Esth. I, 2 (3) אימרין פַּעְיִין the lambs bleated.—Ḥull. 43ᵃ וושט אכלא ביה ופָעְיָא ביה the œsophagus which is affected when the animal eats and also when it lows (or breathes, Rashi). Bekh. 35ᵃ פָּעֵי ומיחזי if the animal has a defect in its mouth which is seen, when it opens its mouth; a. e.—Esp. to be noisy, protest. Ḥull. 133ᵇ סתם כותי מִפְעָא פָעֵי the gentile partner usually makes himself heard (when the Jewish partner is selling). Arakh. 6ᵇ עכו"ם הוא דפעי the gentile will protest (when the object which he dedicated is diverted from its use).
