עֵבֶר II, border, bank, side. Gen. R. s. 42 (expl. העברי, v. preced.) כל העולם כולו מֵעֵ׳ אחד וכ׳ the whole world was on one side (idolaters), and he (Abraham) on the other side; שהוא מע׳ הנהר וכ׳ because he came from the banks of the river (Euphrates), and spoke the Hebrew language (v. עִבְרִו).—מע׳ לים beyond the sea. Erub. 55ᵃ (ref. to Deut. XXX, 12) … אם מע׳ לים לעבור אחריה if the Law be beyond the sea, thou must go over to learn it.
