מֶרֶד I, [running away, running against, cmp. מַעַל,] desertion, rebellion. Pes. 55ᵇ אחר שלשה למִרְדָהּ after three days since her (the bird’s) deserting the eggs; ib. למוֹרְדָהּ. Midr. Till. to Ps. XC בשביל המ׳ שמרדתי אני וכ׳ I beg for amnesty for the rebellion which I made. Gen. R. s. 23; s. 26 (ref. to הוחל, החל, Gen. IV, 26; VI, 1; X, 8) לשון מ׳ it means desertion from the Lord (cmp. חָלַל, חוּלִּין); a. fr.—איגרת מ׳ a document stating a wife’s, or a husband’s, refusal of duties, v. מָרַד I. Keth. 64ᵃ; Y. ib.
