מוּמָר m. (part. Hof. of מוּר) 1) exchanged, v. מוּר. —2) converted, apostate, esp. mumar, an open opponent of Jewish law, non-conformist. [Our w. interchanges with מְשׁוּמָּד in eds. a. mss.] Ḥull. 4ᵇ אפי׳ ישראל מ׳ even a non-observant Israelite; Tosef. ib. I, 1 משומד ed. Zuck. (Var. מ׳). Ḥull. l. c. מ׳ לערלות opposed to circumcision; מ׳ לאותו דבר opposed to this one practice (of slaughtering according to ritual); ib. הוי מ׳ לכל התורה כולה is considered as a rebel against the entire Law; ib. מ׳ לע"א accused of idolatry. Ib. 5ᵃ המ׳ ומנסך וכ׳, expl. ib. מ׳ לנסך וכ׳ one accused of idolatrous libation &c. Erub. 69ᵃ, v. גִּילּוּי. Ab. Zar. 26ᵇ לתיאבון מ׳ להכעיס וכ׳ if eating unslaughtered flesh (נבילות) to gratify his appetite, he is called a mumar; if he does it in a spirit of defiance, he is called a min (heretic). Ib.
