חוֹמֶר II, (חָמַר I; v. P. Sm. 1310 s. v. חומרא) [whatever joins or is joined,] bead, little ball (bulla) hung around the neck; jewel, clasp, seal; trnsf. כמין ח׳ like a jewel, i.e. a precious ethical principle (cmp. Prov. I, 9, a. מַרְגְּלִיתָא), a symbol. Kidd. 22ᵇ היה דורש כמין ח׳ … interpreted this in a symbolical way (giving the practical Biblical law about perforating the slave’s ear an ethical signification); Mekh. Mishp, N’zik., s. 2 כמו חומר (Var. אומר, corr. acc.). Sot. 15ᵃ אדרשנה כמין ח׳ I shall interpret it symbolically.—Pl. חֲמוּרוֹת (fr. חמור, cmp. חֲמוּרְתָּא).
