    Af. - אַרְתַּע to cause to shrink back, withdraw. Targ. Lam. II, 3. Ib. I, 13 אַרְתִּיעַנִי קדל קדם וכ׳ ed. Lag. (in oth. ed. קדם omitted) he made me turn my back in fear before &c.; (Ar. רַתְּעַנִי, Pa.).—Part. pass. מַרְתַּע excited, trembling. Erub. 67ᵃ מַרְתְּעָן שיפוותיה ממתנייתא וכ׳ his lips trembled (in astonishment) at the erudition of &c.; (Ar. מרתע ממתנ׳ he trembled &c.). Ib. מרתע כוליה גופיה מפילפולא וכ׳ his whole body shook (in wonder) at the ingenious argument of &c.; (Ar. s. v. רת: מרתת).
