קִנְטֵר, קִנְתֵּר (cmp. קָנַט) [to sting,] to chide. Pes. 66ᵃ התחיל מְקַנְטְרָן בדברים he began to chide them with words; Y. ib. VI, 33ᵃ מקנתרן. Gen. R. s. 98. Cant. R. to IV, 7 מפני שקִינְטְרָן ולפי וכ׳ because he rebuked them, and as they took their father’s rebuke (in silence), they were allowed to be recorded side by side with Aaron &c.; Num. R. s. 13 שקִינְתְּרָן. Ib. בירך … ומְקַנְתֵּר וכ׳ he blessed the tribes (his sons) and chided Reuben &c.—Y. Sot. I, 16ᵈ bot. מבריחן … ומקנתרן בקלה would he let them escape (unrebuked) from the heavier sin, and rebuke them for the lighter? Y. Snh. VII, 24ᵈ bot. מבריחו … ומְקַנְתְּרוֹ וכ׳ you cannot forego his heavier offence, and rebuke (punish) him for the lighter; a. fr.
    Hithpa. - הִתְקַנְטֵר, הִתְקַנְתֵּר,
    Nithpa. - נִתְקַנְטֵר, נִתְקנְתֵּר 1) to be rebuked. Sifré Deut. 1 נ׳ עלי ר"ע וכ׳ R. Ak. was rebuked on my account before R. G. &c.; Yalk. ib. 789. —2) to make one’s self disagreeable; to vex. Num. R. s. 11 מִתְקַנְטְרִים לפניהם וכ׳ they (the angels of destruction) vex them (the wicked) and say, ‘no peace’ &c.; Yalk. ib. 711.
