    Pi. - פִּיטֵּם 1) to pound spices; to manufacture perfumed oil; to compound incense. Y. Succ. V, 55ᶜ bot. תיקנוה ולא היתה מְפַטֶּמֶת וכ׳ they mended the mortar, but it did not mix the drugs as well as before; Arakh. 10ᵇ. Ker. I, 1 המְפַטֵּם את השמן he that manufactures perfumed oil (in the same manner as prescribed for the Temple, Ex. XXX, 23 sq.); המפ׳ את הקטרת who mixes incense (as prescribed ib. 34 sq.). Y. R. s. 86 (play on פ̇וט̇יפ̇ר̇) שהיה מפ̇ט̇ם עגלים לע"ז he fattened calves (פ̇רים) for idolatrous purposes.     Nif. - נִפְטָם to be fattened. Gen. R. s. 32 ומה אם להסגר … להִפָּטֵם וכ׳ if to be locked up … the beasts came of their own accord, how much more will they come to fatten on the flesh of the mighty (Ez. XXXIX, 4); Yalk. Ez. 380.
