סִכְסֵךְ II, (transpos. of כִּסְכֵּס; cmp. גִּעְגֵּעַ; v. כָּסַס) to chew, nibble; (of fire, cmp. לָחַךְ) to graze, singe, make brittle. Sabb. 21ᵃ האור מְסַכְסֶכֶת בהן the flame nibbles at them (producing sputtering sparks). B. Kam. 6ᵃ top סִכְסְכָה אבניו the lapping fire attacked his neighbor’s stones; (Y. ib. II, 5ᶜ top סיפספה). Tosef. ib. VI, 23 אם היתה מְסַכְסֶכֶת והולכת if the fire went on lapping, opp. קפצה it skipped. Ḥag. 15ᵇ ירדה אש וסכסכה וכ׳ (Ms. M. 2 סבבה; v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 9) fire came down and lapped Rabbi’s chair.
