כָּפַת, (cmp. preced.) to twist, tie. Tam. IV, 1 לא היו כוֹפְתִין וכ׳ they did not twist (tie together the four feet of) the lamb, opp. העקיד, v. עָקַד. Snh. 70ᵇ (ref. to Prov. XXXI, 1) שכְּפָתתּוֹ אמו וכ׳ Ms. M. (ed. שכפאתו) his mother tied him to a post; Num. R. s. 10 כפפתו (corr. acc.). Par. III, 9 כְּפָתוּהָ וכ׳ they tied her (the red heifer) with a rope &c. Gen. R. s. 56 כל מה … עוקד … כופת וכ׳ (some ed. כובש) as much as Abraham bound Isaac …, the Lord tied (held in check) the genii of the gentiles; Yalk. Gen. 101; Yalk. Nah. 561. Gen. R. l. c. כְּפָתֵנִי וכ׳ tie me well. Macc. III, 12 כופת שתי ידיו וכ׳ (some ed. כופה) one puts both his hands in stocks on the pole. Gitt. 14ᵇ אומרין כְּפוֹתוּ כּוֹפְתִין when they (the officers) say, put him in stocks, they put him &c. Succ. 32ᵃ (ref. to כפת, Lev. XXIII, 40) כָּפוּת אם היה פרוד יִכְפְּתֶנּוּ (Ms. M. omits כפות) it must be tied; if the branch is spread, one must tie it closely.
