חִילּוּף, חִלּ׳ m. (חָלַף) 1) exchange, relief.—Pl. חִילּוּפִים, חִילּוּפִין those who relieve. Ber. III, 1 the carriers וחִילּוּפֵיהֶן וחִילּוּפֵי וכ׳ and those designated to relieve them, and those who are to relieve the relief.—Gen. R. s. 91 יש להם ח׳ can be replaced; (Y. Ber. II, 5ᶜ חֲלִיפִין). Num. R. s. 10 (ref. to חלוף, Prov. XXXI, 8) שהן חִלּוּפֵי אביהם for they take the place of their father; a. fr. —2) the contrary, reverse. Ab. Zar. 46ᵇ או ח׳ is it not rather the reverse?; (Y. Taan. III, 67ᵃ או חֵלֶף); Y. Ab. Zar. V, 45ᵇ top; a. fr.—ח׳ הדברים the things are just the reverse. Ab. Zar. 51ᵇ. Y. Ter. II, 41ᶜ bot.; a. fr.—Pl. as ab. Y. Peah I, 16ᵇ top אבל בגוים ח׳ but as regards gentiles, the opposite takes place.
