בְּהַת, בְּהֵית (√בה, v. בהי) 1) (= h. בּוּשׁ, cmp. רוּץ a. רְהַט) to be confounded, abashed, ashamed. Targ. O. Gen. XLIX, 8; a. fr.—Y. Shek. I, beg. 45ᵈ (in Hebr. phraseol.) הן נקרא ולא נבהית (Bab. ed. הנקרא … נבעית) can we read this and not feel ashamed? Y. Keth. XII, 35ᵃ top; Y. Kil. IX, 32ᵇ top, if I rise among the righteous, לא נבהת I may not feel ashamed. Ib. ומה אנא בהית בעבדאי (read בעובדיי) why should I be ashamed of my doings? Y. Kidd. IV, 65ᶜ top בָּהֲתִין וכ׳ they are ashamed of one another. Y. Orl. I, 61ᵇ top בהית מסתכל ביה is ashamed to look at him. Lev. R. s. 31 לא בהתין yet are not ashamed (to worship them). —2) (= בְּעֵית) to be bewildered. Keth. 62ᵃ (prov.) a woman used to abortion (or loss of children through death) לא בהתה is no longer besides herself (when it reoccurs; Ar.: is not ashamed).

Keth. l. c. if I rise among the wicked לא נַבְהִית (or נְבָהֵת) I may not put (them) to shame. —2) to frighten, confound.—Y. R. Hash. II, 58ᵃ bot. לא תבהית וכ׳ confound not thy Master’s children (the Israelites).

    Ithpe. - אִתְבְּהֵית , contr. אִבְּהִית to be put to shame. Cant. R. to II, 5 והוא מתב׳ וכ׳ and he felt ashamed and went away. Y. Sabb. VI, 8ᶜ top מִבַּהֲתָא she is ashamed.
