שֶׁקֶל, [weight,] Shekel, a coin; ש׳ הקדש the sacred Sh., twenty Gerah or M’ʿah, twice the weight of the common Shekel (v. סֶלַע). Bekh. VIII, 7 (49ᵇ) כולם בש׳ הק׳ all these definitions refer to the sacred Sh. Ib. 50ᵃ. B. Bath. 9ᵃ שלישית הש׳ one-third of a Sh. (Neh. X, 33); a. fr.—Esp. (מחצית הש׳, Ex. XXX, 13) the head-tax for the Temple. Ned. IV, 2 שִׁקְלוֹ, v. שָׁקַל. Shek. II, 3 הרי אלו לשִׁקְלִי these coins are designated for my contribution as head-tax; שאביא מהן לשקלי that I will offer my head-tax out of them; a. fr.—Pl. שְׁקָלִים. Ib. I, 1, v. שָׁמַע. Ib. II, 1, v. דַּרְכּוֹן. Meg. 13ᵇ גלוי … לשקול ש׳ … הקדים שִׁקְלֵיהֶן לשְׁקָלָיו וכ׳ it was known before God that Haman would, at some future day, pay Shekels for the destruction of Israel, therefore He made their Shekels (contributions to the sanctuary) to precede his Shekels, this is why we are told (Shek.
