עָטַן, (cmp. טנן; v. Targ. Job XXI, 24 for עטיניו, a. meanings of Arab. ʿaṭana) [to moisten, cause dripping,] to pack olives in a vat preparatory to crushing. Men. VIII, 4 (86ᵃ) הזית השלישי עוֹטְנוֹ בתוך הבית וכ׳ (Ms. M. בבית, Bab. ed. בבית הבד) the third crop of olives (which are hard) he packs in the house, until they begin to rot &c. Tosef. Toh. X, 4 העוֹטֵין זיתיו בין שני בדין (R. S. to Toh. IX, 3 העוֹטֵן … בשני בתים) if a man divides his olives and packs them in two separate pits (houses); a. fr.—Part. pass. עָטוּן; pl. עֲטוּנִים, עֲטוּנִין. Y. Dem.
