סָנַן [to sting, cmp. סְנֶה; of color:] to be bright, shine. V. סְנוּנִית.—Part. pass. סָנוּן; pl. סְנוּנִין. Num. R. s. 4 (expl. מפזז, II Sam. VI, 16) היה לבוש בגדי זהב ס׳ וכ׳ he was dressed in glistening, gold-embroidered garments shining like fine gold.
    Pi. - סִינֵּן to clear, filter; (of metals) to smelt, refine. Sabb. XX, 2 מְסַנְּנִין את היין וכ׳ you may (on the Sabbath) filter wine through a cloth &c.Ḥull. Ḥull. 67ᵃ יבחושין שסִינְּנָן gnats in liquids which one has passed through a filter; a. e.—Part. pass. מְסוּנָּן refined, bright. Num. R. l. c. (expl. מפזז, v. supra) הזהב המס׳ … פוזז the refined gold which he wore made a rustling noise.
    Nithpa. - נִסְתַּנֵּן,
    Hithpol. - הִסְתּוֹנֵן to be refined. Ib. s. 7, beg. נִסְתַּנְּנוּ הפסולות ממנו וכ׳ when the base metals are removed from it (the silver) by refining, it shows at once &c. Pesik. R. s. 14 (ref. to Ps. XII, 7) [read:] כשם שהכסף … ומצטרף ומִסְתּוֹנֵן וכ׳ as the silver to be smelted enters the crucible and is smelted and refined etc.; כך היא התורה מִסְתּוֹנֶנֶת וכ׳ so is the Law refined and smelted (through study) in forty-nine ways.
