  1. סוּלָּם, ascent, ladder. B. Bath. III, 6, v. מִצְרִי II. Gen. R. s. 68 בו עולים ויורדים בס׳ bo (Gen. XXVIII, 12) , that is, they went up and down the ladder. Ib. סֻלָּם זה סיני sullam (whose numerical value is 110) is Sinai; a. fr.—סוּלָּמָהּ של צור the Ladder of Tyre (Scala Tyriorum), a promontory south of Tyre. Y. Ab. Zar. I, 40ᵃ bot.; a. e.—Pl. סוּלָּמוֹת. Gen. R. l. c. הקב"ה יושב ועושה ס׳ וכ׳ the Lord makes ladders, causing one to go down, the other to rise (on the social scale). Sabb. 26ᵃ מס׳ של צור וכ׳ from the Promontory of Tyre (along the sea-coast) to Haifa. Ruth R. to IV, 21 (play on שַׂלְמוֹן) עד כאן עשו ס׳ לנשיאים וכ׳ thus far they made ladders for princes (the genealogical tree of chiefs), from now (Salmon) they made ladders for kings; a. fr.—2) a yoke in the shape of a ladder, put on the ass to prevent him from scratching a sore.   2. סוּלָּם, a sort of hem, chain-stitch. Y. M. Kat. III, 83ᵈ, v. קֶפֶשׂ.—Pl. as ab. Bab. M. Kat. 26ᵇ הקורע … מתוך הס׳ he who rends his garment (in mourning) where it has been mended with chain-stitches after a previous rent.
