נָוֵול , נָוֵל (cmp. נָבֵל) to be disfigured, look repulsive; to degenerate. Tosef. Sot. XIV, 7 אזלה ונָוְלָה (Var. ונָבְלָה) becomes more and more corrupt.
    Pi. - נִוֵּול to disfigure; to disgrace. B. Bath. 154ᵃ אי … לנַוְּולוֹ you are not permitted to disgrace him (to search a corpse for tokens of maturity). Sot. I, 6 מעבירים ממנה כדי לנַוְּולָהּ we divest her (of all jewelry) in order to disgrace her. Ned. 66ᵃ בנות ישראל … שהעניות מְנַוַּולְתָּן Israel’s daughters are handsome, it is only poverty that makes them appear homely. Sifré Deut. 240 (ref. to נבלה, Deut. XXII, 21) לא עצמה בלבד נִוְּולָה וכ׳ she has disgraced not only herself but all virgins of Israel; a. e.—Part. pass. מְנוּוָּל; f. מְנוּוֶּלֶת; pl. מְנוּוָּלִין, מְנוּוָּלוֹת. Y. Pes. VI, 33ᵃ, sq. זבח מ׳ (not מזבח) a repulsive (putrid) sacrifice (Sabb. 116ᵇ מוטלין כנבלה). Naz. IV, 5, a. e., v. אֶפֶשׁ. Tosef. Sot. II, 3 הרי היא בדוקה ומנ׳ she (by refusing to drink the searching waters) is already searched and disgraced, i.e. has admitted her guilt. Y. M. Kat. III, beg. 81ᶜ. שלא … מנ׳ that they may not enter the Sabbath with neglected hair; a. e.—Kidd. 30ᵇ אם פגע בך מנ׳ זה וכ׳ if that ugly one (the tempter) meets thee, drag him to the house of learning, i.e. overcome evil inclinations by study.
