מָרוּת f. (מָר) 1) authority, dominion. Pesik. R. s. 40 (play on מֹרִיָּה) ארץ שמָרוּתוֹ … בתוכה (not לתוכה) the district in which the lordship of the world resides; ואף המקום מ׳ הוא על וכ׳ and the place, too, is the ruler of all other places (ref. to בעלתה, I Chr. XIII, 6, as a surname of Zion, v. בַּעֲלָה). Ber. 48ᵃ (in Chald. dict.) קא חזית דלא מקבלי מ׳ you see that they (the Pharisees) recognize no (royal) authority. —2) domestication. Sabb. 106ᵇ (v. דְּרוֹר) שאינה מקבלה מ׳ it does not submit to domestication. Tosef. B. Kam. I, 4 אם היו מ׳ Var. in ed. Zuck. (sub. של; ed. מרום, מרוס; ed. Zuck. תַּרְבּוּת) if they (the animals) were domesticated, opp. באו מן המדבר.
