זִיוּוּג, (זָוַג) coupling, matching, marital destiny. Gen. R. s. 68, beg. אין זִיוּוּגוֹ של וכ׳ man’s conjugal destiny is decreed by the Lord; (Yalk. Jud. 70 זוֹגוֹ or זִוְגֹּו, v. זֶוֶג). Ib. יש שהוא הולך אצל זיווגו וכ׳ (Yalk. זוגו) one must travel to meet her who is designated for him, to another she travels to meet him. Midr. Till. to Ps. LIX ייחד הב"ה שמו על הז׳ the Lord has His special name connected with marriage (Gen. XXIV, 50; Jud. XIV, 4; Prov. XIX, 14); a. fr.—Trnsf. a corresponding case, solace offered by pointing to a similar case (v. זָוַג). Pesik. R. s. 30 מבקשים ז׳ לירושלים וכ׳ were looking out for a similar bereavement as a solace to Jerusalem and could not find any (ref. to Lam. II, 13).
