זוּג m. (זָוַג) 1) couple, pair, set. Erub. X, 1 מכניסן ז׳ ז׳ he must bring them in, one set at a time (on his head and arm). Snh. 12ᵃ (in a secret letter) ז׳ בא וכ׳ a couple (of scholars or messengers of Jewish authorities) came from Rakkath (Tiberias), and the eagle (Rome) caught them; a. fr.—בֶּן ז׳ partner, equal, match, counterpart. Gitt. 90ᵇ אין זה בן זוּגוֹ וכ׳ this (second husband) is not the equal of the first husband (is morally inferior). Gen. R. s. 11 שאין לו בן ז׳ it (the seventh day) has no match (the week having three couples of days and one single day). Ib. כ"י היא בן זוּגָךְ the congregation of Israel be thy match. Gen. R. s. 7 בהמות יש לו בן ז׳ the B’hemoth has a partner (is created male and female).—Pl. זוּגוֹת. Ib. אין להם בן ז׳ (for בני זוג, cmp. ברזג) have no partners (females). Deut. R. s. 2 שמים וארץ ז׳ וב׳ heaven and earth are couples, sun and moon are couples &c.—Pes. 110ᵇ יש בו משום ז׳ the apprehension of danger from even numbers applies to it, v. זוֹגָא; a. fr.—Esp.
