גּוּנְדָּא II f. (= גּוּדָּא) 1) wall. Pl. גּוּנְדֵּי. Sot. 22ᵇ דחייפי ג׳ (Ar. s. v. חף 5, v. infra) who scratch themselves against the walls (in saintly self-chastisement). —2) gunda, name of a domestic overall used at work for the protection of one’s clothes, duster. *Gitt. 68ᵇ (in Hebr. diction) גּוּנְדּוֹ his duster (was all that was left to Solomon) (Snh. 20ᵇ (Ms. M.) Yalk. Kings 177, Tanḥ. Aḥăre 1 קודו; Koh. R. to II, 10 קודיה; Y. Snh. II, 20ᶜ bot. קניא). Sabb. 119ᵃ R. Anan (while preparing for the Sabbath) לביש ג׳ (Ms. O. גורנא, Alf. Ms. גודנא, Asheri ed. Ven. גונרא, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 2) put a gunda on.—Pl. גּוּנְדֵּי. Sot. 22ᵇ בי דינא … מהני דחפו ג׳ let the great Court call to account those who are wrapt up in overalls (hypocrites whom you cannot see through; Rashi: those who wrap themselves in cloaks as though they were true Pharisees; oth. vers., v. supra).
