פְּתִילָה f. (preced. art.) 1) twisted cord, wick. Sabb. II, 1 פְּתִילַת האידן a bast wick; פ׳ המדבר the wick of the desert, v. שִׁבְרָא. Ib. פ׳ הבגד the wick made of rags of a garment. Ib. 5 חוץ מן הפ׳ except when he has the intention of saving the wick; a. fr.—Pl. פְּתִילוֹת. Ib. 20ᵇ עד כאן פסול פ׳ so far the Mishnah refers to wicks unfit for use on the Sabbath. Ib. 21ᵇ; a. fr.—Gitt. 58ᵃ שתי פ׳ בנר אחד two wicks in one lamp (euphem. for adultery). —2) string; bar. Snh. VII, 2 ומדליק את הפ׳ וכ׳ and (the executioner) lights (heats) the string and throws it into his mouth; expl. ib. 52ᵃ פ׳ של אבר, v. אֲבָר; Y. ib. VII, 24ᵇ bot. פ׳ של בעץ a bar of plumbum album; (oth. opin.) פ׳ של נפט a wick dipped in naphtha. Yeb. 6ᵇ בישול פ׳ boiling (melting) a bar of lead; Sabb. 106ᵃ.
