שִׁפְחָה שִׁפְחָה, v. מִשְׁפָּחָה) [attached to the household,] handmaid, slave.—ש׳ חרופה, v. חֲרוּפָה.—Snh. 39ᵃ נטלו … לו ש׳ לשמשו they took a rib from him (Adam), and gave him a handmaid to wait on him. Ib. 99ᵇ מוטב תהא ש׳ לאומה זו וכ׳ better for her to be a handmaid to this nation than a mistress to any other nation. Kidd. III, 12 ולד ש׳ ונכרית the child of a slave or of a gentile woman. Ib. 13 ממזר שנשא ש׳ וכ׳ if a bastard married a slave, their child is a slave. Ib. 69ᵃ האומר לשִׁפְחָתוֹ וכ׳ if one says to his bondwoman, be thou free, but thy child (with which thou goest) shall be a slave, the child follows her status (is free).
