    Pa. - שַׁמֵּית (denom. of שַׁמְתָּא) to excommunicate, accurse M. Kat. 16ᵃ מנלן דמְשַׁמְּתִינָן whence do we derive the authority to excommunicate (persons refusing to obey the summons of the court)? Ib.; Shebu. 36ᵃ שַׁמְּתֵיה וכ׳, v. שִׁיפוֹרָא. M. Kat. l. c. הנהו בי תלתא דמְשַׁמְּתֵי לא אתו וכ׳ Ms. M. (ed. דשַׁמִּיתוּ) when a court of three has declared a ban, another court of three cannot raise it. Ib. 17ᵃ ברישא מְשַׁמֵּית וכ׳ first he banned himself, and then him (the guilty scholar); a. fr.—Part. pass. (h. form) מְשׁוּמָּת. Sabb. 67ᵃ (in an incantation) ליטא תבור ומש׳ cursed, broken, and banned.
