  2. שִׁיפוֹרָא, horn, trumpet, announcement. Nidd. 38ᵃ ש׳ דירחא Ar. (ed. only ש׳) the shofar announcing the New Moon. Succ. 34ᵃ; Sabb. 36ᵃ Ms. M. (ed. שופרא), v. חֲצוֹצַרְתָּא. M. Kat. 27ᵇ שמע קל ש׳ דשכבא he heard the trumpet announcing a death in town; a. e.—Pl. שִׁיפוֹרֵי. Ab. Zar. 40ᵃ נפקי ש׳ דרבא וכ׳ Ms. M. (ed. נפק) the announcements of Raba went forth to prohibit it, and those of R. H. permitting it; ib. 57ᵇ; M. Kat. 17ᵇ קרי ביה אלפא ש׳ וכ׳ sound into it (the pitcher) one thousand blasts (proclaiming the ban). Ib. מאי שיפ̇ור̇י שנפ̇ר̇עין וכ׳ what does the blowing signify? That he will be punished. Shebu. 36ᵃ בארבע מאה ש׳ שמתיה וכ׳ Barak declared the ban over Meroz with four hundred blasts of the trumpet; M. Kat. 16ᵃ; a. e.
  3. שִׁיפוֹרָא, (v. שׁוֹפָר) charity box. Gitt. 60ᵇ ההוא ש׳ דהוה the charity box which was first kept in the house of R. J., and was transferred to &c.; [otb. opin. the shofar for public announcements].
