שָׁחַט I, to draw, stretch. Part. pass. שָׁחוּט. Y. Yoma IV, 41ᵈ top (expl. זהב שׁחוט, I Kings X, 17) שהיה משוך כשעוה it was drawn out like wax; Cant. R. to III, 10; Yoma 45ᵃ שנטוה כחוט it was spun like a thread; Ḥull. 30ᵇ. Ib. (to prove that in slaughtering you must draw the knife over the animal’s throat and not chop) אין ושחט אלא ומשך וכ׳ v’shaḥaṭ (Lev. I, 5) means and ‘he shall draw’, and so it says zahab shaḥuṭ (v. supra) and also ḥets shaḥuṭ (Jer. IX, 7; Keri שוחט).
