קוֹלָן II, (denom. of קוֹל) shouter, esp. night-guard, crier. —Pl. קוֹלָנִים, קוֹלָנִין. Pesik. Vayhi, p. 66ᵇ ואח"כ הביא עליהם ק׳ כגון הצפרדעים and then the Lord brought shouters against them (like troops preparing an attack), that is the frogs; Yalk. Ex. 182; Pesik. R. s. 17 קָלָנִים; Tanḥ. Bo 4 קָלָאנִים (fr. Chald. קָלָא). Cant. R. to I, 12 העמיד עליהם ק׳ וכ׳, v. בוקינוס; ib. התחיל העמיד … בקלאנים (corr. acc.); Yalk. ib. 983 העמיד … קלנים לעוררן he appointed criers over them to wake them up. Lev. R. s. 16 אילין צפריא ק׳ … יבא הקול וכ׳ birds (for the leper’s sacrifice, Lev. XIV, 4) are noise-makers; the Lord said, let the voice come and bring atonement for the sin of the voice (evil gossip); Yalk. ib. 559. Tanḥ. T’tsavveh 11 (play on מ̇ר̇ים̇ ק̇ל̇ון, Prov. III, 35, with allusion to וירם תולעים, Ex. XVI, 20) היתה ק̇ל̇אנ̇ין של תולעים וכי a night watch of vermin (that keep people awake) went forth &c.; Y’lamd. to Ex. XXVIII quot. in Ar. קלנין; (Yalk. Prov. 935 היו תולעים וכ׳).—Fem. קוֹלָנִית a screaming woman. Keth. VII, 6 אף הק׳ also a screamer (may be sent away without a dowry); Tosef. ib. VII, 7; (variously expl.) Keth. 72ᵇ; Y. ib. VII, 31ᵇ sq.—Pl. קוֹלָנִיּוֹת. Tanḥ. Naso 2 דרך … לא ק׳ וכ׳ the daughters of Israel are not loud, nor walk with uplifted foot &c. (Tanḥ. ed. Bub. ib. 4 sing.).
