פָּקַס II (denom. of פֶּיקָס) 1) to paint the face with rouge (cmp. φυκόω). Sabb. X, 6 וכן הפּוֹקֶסֶת and the same is the case with her who rouges (on the Sabbath); Y. ib. X, end, 12ᵈ הפוקסת חייבת משום צובעה rouging comes under the category of dyeing. Bab. ib. 64ᵇ שלא תכחול ולא תִפְקוֹס that she (the menstruant) must not paint (her eyes) nor rouge. M. Kat. 20ᵇ אינו רשאי לכוף … ולהיות פוקסת dare not force his wife (mourning for a parent) to paint or rouge; a. fr. —2) to make small curls pasted on the forehead. Sabb. 94ᵇ (ref. to Sabb. X, 6) פוקסת משום טווה curling comes under the category of spinning; ib. 95ᵃ גודלת ופוקסת משום בונה plaiting the hair and curling comes under the category of building.
    Pi. - פִּיקֵּס to remove the coils of blossoms on gourds. Maasr. I, 5 משיִפָּקְסוּ ואם אינו מְפקֵּס וכ׳ are subject to tithes when they are trimmed, and if one does not want to trim &c.; B. Mets. 88ᵇ, expl. משינטל פיקס שלהן, v. פֶּיקָס. Y. Maasr. I, 49ᵃ היה מפקס ראשון וכ׳ (not הוה) if one trims one by one (just when he needs them) and boils &c.; עד שיְפַקֵּס כל צורכו until he has trimmed as many as he wants for immediate use; Tosef. ib. I, 5 היה מְפַקֵּיץ ראשין וכ׳ ed. Zuck. Var. Ib. 6 תורמין … אע"פ שלא פִּיקֵּץ ed. Zuck. (Var. פקס) one must give T’rumah of gourds, even if one did not trim them.
