עָלוּב, עֲלוּבָה f. (עָלַב) 1) insulted, humbled, submissive, lowly; ill-fated, poor. Meg. 29ᵃ ע׳ ואינו ע׳ מי נדחה מפני מי if one is submissive, and the other is not, which will yield?; Taan. 16ᵃ (v. Sifré Deut. 306; Yalk. Prov. 938 (ref. to Prov. VI, 6) ע׳ היה האדם הזה שצריך ללמוד … ע׳ היה וכ׳ (ע׳ הוא) it was a (sufficient) humiliation for man that he had to learn from the ant; had he learned and acted (accordingly), he would have been sufficiently humbled, but he was to have learned, and did not.
