סַפְדָּן, (preced. wds.) hired mourner, speaker at funerals or memorial services. M. Kat. 8ᵃ בא ס׳ וכ׳ a wailer came and placed himself at the door (offering his services).—Pl. סַפְדָּנִים, סַפְדָּנִין. Ber. 62ᵃ כשם … מן הס׳ וכ׳ as the dead are called to account (for their deeds), so the wailers and those who respond after them will be made responsible (for their eulogies).
