סִלְסֵל, to swing, lift up; trnsf. to hold in high esteem. Y. Ber. VII, 11ᵇ bot.; Y. Naz. V, end, 54ᵇ; Gen. R. s. 91, a. e. it is written in the Book of Ben Sira סַלְסְלֶיהָ ותרוממך ובין וכ׳ hold her (the Torah) high, and she will uplift thee and seat thee between princes (v. Prov. IV, 8). Pesik. R. s. 20 להרכיבה … ולסַלְסְלָהּ בכל וכ׳ to let her ride on an elephant … and raise her among all the nobles of the kingdom; a. e.—Part. pass. מְסוּלְסָל (v. סֹלֶת) select, sublime. Cant. R. to I, 1 המעולה שבשירים המס׳ שבשירים the loftiest, the sublimest of songs.
סִלְסֵל, (cmp. שלשל) to turn, to plait, esp. to curl the hair. Pesik. R. s. 26 הרי מְסַלְסֵל קווצותיו behold, he (Elijah) curls his locks! Meg. 18ᵃ; R. Hash. 26ᵇ (ref. to Prov. IV, 8) the Rabbis did not know what sals’leha meant, until they heard Rabbi’s handmaid say to one twirling his hair, עד מתי אתה מסלסל בשערך how long wilt thou curl thy hair (from which they deduced that sals’leha meant, ‘turn the law in all directions’); Naz. 3ᵃ. Ib. I, 1 if one vowing uses the expression הריני מסלסֹל וכ׳ ‘I will be a hair-curler’, he is a Nazarite; Y. ib. I, 51ᵇ top כאומר הריני מן המְסַלְסְלִין it is as if saying, I will be one of those wearing curled locks. Ib. אֲסַלְסֵל I will curl my hair. Midr. Till. to Ps. LXXX (expl. פתואל) שהיה מסלסל בשערו וכ׳ he curled his hair like a maiden (v. פָּתַל); a. e.—[
