מוֹרָא I, c. (b. h.; fear, reverence. Ab. I, 3, a. fr. מ׳ שמים the fear of the Lord. Ber. 28ᵇ שתהא מ׳ שמים עליכם כמ׳ ב"וד (Ms. M. שיהא) that your fear of the Lord be as great as the fear of man (before whom you hide yourselves when you want to do wrong). Kidd. 31ᵃ הקדים הקב"ה מ׳ האם למ׳ האב the Lord (the Bible text) places the reverence due to the mother before that due to the father (Lev. XIX, 3). Ib.ᵇ איזהו מ׳ whereby is filial reverence shown?; Sifra K’dosh., beg. איזו היא מ׳. Ab. III, 2 שאלמלא מוֹרָאָהּ וכ׳ but for the fear of it (the secular government) &c.; a. fr.—Fem. form מוֹרְאָה, constr. מוֹרְאַת. Kidd. 30ᵇ. Num. R. s. 15 מורא זו … מ׳ הרב this ‘fear’ (Koh. VIII, 13), we know not what it refers to; but on reading … (Lev. XIX, 32) we learn that it means the reverence due to one’s teacher.
