לָפַף (cmp. לְפֵי) to cling to, to clasp. Tanḥ. B’har 3 (ref. to וילפת, Ruth III, 8) לְפָפַתּוֹ she clasped him; Ruth R. to l. c. לפפתו כחזזית (some ed. לפתתו), v. חֲזָזִית.
    Pi. - לִפֵּף 1) same. Bekh. 41ᵃ (interpret. יַלֶּפֶת) שמְלַפֶּפֶת והולכת וכ׳ it continues to cling (to the body) to the day of death, v. supra. Sot. 3ᵇ (play on ילפתו, Job VI, 18) מְלַפַּפְתּוֹ והולכת לפניו וכ׳ (sin) clings to him and goes before him on the day of judgment. —2) to wrap, swathe. Sabb. 129ᵇ bot. מְלַפְּפִין את הוולד וכ׳ you may swathe a new-born child on the Sabbath.—Part. pass. מְלוּפָּף; f. מְלוּפֶּפֶת. Deut. R. s. 3 התורה … חתומה באש ומל׳ באש the Torah scroll which was given to Moses,—the skin was of white fire, written upon with black fire, sealed with fire and swathed with bands of fire.
