כָּעַר, כָּאַר (cmp. כָּעַס) to be dark, ugly, repulsive (cmp. אוּכְמָא).—Part. pass. כָּעוּר, כָּאוּר; f. כְּעוּרָה; pl. כְּעוּרִים, כְּעוּרִין; כְּעוּרוֹת, כְּא׳ a) ugly, ungainly. Gen. R. s. 36 לפיכך … כ׳ ומפוחם therefore shall this man (thou) be ugly and black. B. Kam. IX, 4 (100ᵇ) צבעו כ׳, v. כַּלְכּוּס. Esth. R. to I, 12 אם רואין אותי כ׳ if they find me ungainly. Cant. R. to V, 11; a. fr.—b) unbecoming, indecent. Y. Keth. VII, 31ᶜ top כא׳ הדבר תצא that is indecent conduct, and cause for divorce; (Yeb. 24ᵇ, sq. מכוער). Gen. R. s. 60 שכ׳ לאיש וכ׳ for it is unbecoming for a man to walk behind a woman.—c) (cmp. חָוַר) not evident, strange, implausible. Ḥull. 115ᵇ; 117ᵃ; Kidd. 9ᵇ כעורה זו ששנה וכ׳ is what R. … taught to be rejected?—Tosef. Kel. B. Bath. II, 2 כ׳ מזו טימא וכ׳ something more strange than this (or more inappropriate to be used as a seat) did R. … declare unclean.
    Pi. - כִּיעֵר to make or declare repulsive.—Part. pass. מְכוֹעָר, f. מְכוֹעֶרֶת; pl. מְכוֹעָרִין, מְכוֹעָרוֹת = כָּעוּר &c. Keth. 105ᵃ מ׳ הדיין וכ׳ contemptible is the judge who receives fees for giving judgment. Yeb. 24ᵇ, sq., v. supra. Yoma 86ᵃ כמה מכ׳ דרכיו how mean are his ways!; a. fr.
    Hithpa. - הִתְכָּעַר to appear ugly, become ungainly. Gen. R. s. 17 הִתְכָּעַרְתִּי בעיניו I appeared repulsive to him. Gen. R. s. 45 מִתְכָּעֶרֶת ומתעזבת she becomes ungainly and is neglected. Cant. R. to II, 14 מתכ׳ ומתועבת, v. תָּעַב.
