גְּזֵי גְּזֵי, גְּזָא (v. גזז) 1) to cut. Sabb. 150ᵇ למִיגְזָא ליה אסא (Ms. M. למיגז, v. גְּזַז) to cut a myrtle branch for one (attending a wedding, Rashi לה for the bride); ib. למיגזא ליה גלימא (Ms. M. למיגז, Ar. s. v. גד: למיגד ‘to cut’, v. גדד, or ‘to sew’, v. אֲגַד I) to cut a shroud for the dead; Bets. 6ᵃ למיגז (Ms. M. למיגד, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note). Snh. 106ᵃ (prov.) when the camel asked for horns, אודנין דהוו ליה גָּזְיִין מיניה they cut off the ears he had. Ib. 96ᵃ אִיגְזְיָיךְ אנא I myself will cut thy hair. Succ. 37ᵇ אתי למִגְזַיֵּיה he may be induced to cut it (Ms. M. למיכל … למיתלש). Gitt. 3ᵃ אתי למיגזייה he may cut it short, i.e. say only a portion of a lengthy legal formula, v. גּוּז. Y. ib. V, 47ᵇ top ומה דאת גָּזֵי גְזֵי and what crop thou mayest cut, cut, i.e. enjoy the crop as my tenant; a. e. —2) to pass, go out of one’s way. Pes. 111ᵇ לגְזוּיֵי לה Rashi, v. גְּזַז. Ib. וגזי לה (Ms. M. גייז ליה, v. גּוּז) he went out of the demon’s way.—Targ. Jer.
