אָמַד אָמַד, (√מד; v. מָדַד) to form an approximate estimate, to guess; to appraise, judge, deliver an expert’s opinion. Erub. 58ᵇ אוֹמְדוֹ וכ׳ he forms an approximate estimate of the height of the hill, and passes on. Snh. 78ᵇ אֲמָדוּהוּ למיתה they (the experts) declared his injuries to be fatal; (Y. ib. IX, 27ᵃ bot., also עמד׳) א׳ לחיים the opinion was that he would recover; a. fr.—Ḥull. 51ᵃ אמדה נפשה the animal before taking a leap measures its strength. ערכים סמוכים
