שָׁתַף שָׁתַף , Pi. שִׁתֵּף (Shaf. of תף; cmp. Assyr. tappû, Del. Assyr. Handw. p. 712) to join, combine, attach; to form a partnership. Y. Taan. II, 65ᵈ שי׳ … בישראל the Lord combined his great name with Israel’s (ישר־אל). Ib. הרי אני מְשׁתֵּף וכ׳ I will have my great name bound up with theirs, that they may live. Snh. 63ᵃ כל המשתף שם שמים וכ׳ he who combines the name of God with something else (imparting divine honor to God and a material object at the same time) will be uprooted from the world; Succ. 45ᵇ. Ib. והא קא משתף וכ׳ Ms. M. (ed. משתתף, corr. acc.) but (in saying, ‘unto Yah and unto thee, O altar’) does not one combine the name &c.? Ber. 63ᵃ כל המשתף … בצערו וכ׳ as for him who includes the name of God in the expression of his trouble (blesses God in his calamity), his means of support will be doubled. Ex. R. s. 42 (ref. to Ex. XXXII, 4) זה אלהים … שִׁיתְּפוּ אותו עמו (not עמהן) they did not say, ‘this (calf) is God’, but ‘these are thy gods’, they combined Him and it; a. fr.—Part. pass. מְשׁוּתָּף. Y.
