קַרְפִּיף, an area (of seventy square cubits) outside of a town, added to the city limits for the purposes of Sabbath distances. Erub. V, 2 נותנין ק׳ לעיר for measuring Sabbath limits we allow a ḳ. to each town; וחכמים … ק׳ אלא בין וכ׳ but the scholars say, a ḳ. as an extension to city limits is allowed only in the case of two neighboring towns; אם יש לזו … עושה ק׳ לשתיהן להיותן כאחת (Y. ed. קִרְפּוּף) if there is a space of seventy cubits for one and an equal space for the other, this forms a ḳ. for both, so that they may be considered as one town.
