צָרָה II f. (b. h.; צַר) 1) fem. of צַר. —2) anguish, trouble, distress, persecution. Ber. 9ᵇ דיה לצ׳ בשעתה time enough for the trouble when it comes (‘sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof’). Ib. 63ᵃ (ref. to Prov. XXIV, 10) כל המרפה … ביום צ׳ he who neglects the words of the Law, has no strength on the day of trouble. Pes. 117ᵃ על כל צ׳ וצ׳ וכ׳ in every trouble that may not come (euphem. for: that comes) upon them. Yeb. 63ᵇ (from Ben Sira) אל תצר צָרת מחר וכ׳ worry not about to-morrow’s trouble, for thou knowest not what the day may beget. Sot. 12ᵃ (play on צֶרֶת, I Chr. IV, 7) שנעשית צ׳ וכ׳ because she was a trouble (an object of envy) to her companions. Snh. IV, 5 שמא תאמרו מה לנו ולצ׳ וכ׳ lest you say, why should we undergo this trouble (of giving testimony)? &c. Gen. R. s. 81 וכיון שראה שצָרָתוֹ צ׳ and when he saw that his trouble was a real trouble (when he felt greatly embarrassed). Ib. אל תזכירני צָרָתִיִ do not cause me to mention my trouble. Cant. R. to III, 4 (ref. to Is. XXI, 2) כבר נתעלה צָרָתָהּ של עילם … כבר נוצרה צרתה וכ׳ (not נתעלם) the anguish which Elam has to bring has already been brought up (prepared), … the anguish through Media has already been created; a. v. fr.—Pl. צָרוֹת.
