פְּרוּטָה פְּרוּטָה f. (פָּרַט) 1) small change, in gen. money. Snh. 97ᵃ (the Messiah will not come) עד שתכלה פ׳ מן הכיס until the money is gone from the bag (general poverty will prevail). Pesik. Baḥod., p. 101ᵇ; Yalk. Ex. 271 בראשונה שהיתה הפ׳ מצויה וכ׳ (not בראשון) formerly when money was plentiful, people were anxious to hear a word of the Mishnah &c. (legal discussions), ועכשיו שאין הפ׳ מצויה וכ׳ but now when money is scarce (Israel is poor) …, people want to hear a word of the Bible &c. (cheering the soul); a. fr.—Esp. p’ruṭah, a small coin, one eighth of the as (אִיסָר). Kidd. I, 1. Shebu. VI, 1; B. Mets. IV, 7 שוה פ׳ the value of a P’ruṭah; a. v. fr.—Ned. 33ᵇ קא מהני ליה פ׳ דרב יוסף he gains the poor man’s penny of R. Joseph (who considers the keeper of a lost object a paid guardian, because, while engaged in one religious work, he is exempt from every other religious duty that may arise).—Pl. פְּרוּטוֹת. Y. Kidd.
