עָמַץ (v. אָמַץ; cmp. עָמַס) to press.
    Pi. - עִימֵּץ to close the eyes. Sabb. XXIII, 5 אין מְעַמְּצִין וכ׳ Mish. ed. (Y. ed. מאמצ׳; Bab. ed. 151ᵇ מְעַצְּמִין, Ms. M. מעמ׳; v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. notes) you must not close the eyes of a deceased on the Sabbath והמְעַמֵּץ עם יציאת וכ׳ (Y. ed. מא׳; Bab. ed. המעצים) and he who closes the eyes of a dying person &c. Ib. (in Gemarah) המעמץ (Ms. M. המאמץ). Ib. 77ᵇ, v. אָמַץ.
    Hithpa. - הִתְעַמֵּץ to be closed, to close itself. Ib. 181ᵇ הרוצה שיִתְעַמְּצוּ עיניו וכ׳ Ms. O. a. early eds. (Ms. M. שתאמץ, incorr.; ed. שיִתְעַצְּמוּ) he who wants to have the eyes of a deceased closed &c.; Tosef. ib. XVII, (XVIII), 19 הרוצה לעַמֵּץ. Ib. והן מתאמצות וכ׳; Sabb. l. c. והן מִתְעַמְּצִין וכ׳ Ms. M. (ed. מתעצמין) and they will close themselves, v. אָמַץ.
