מִסְמֵס II (cmp. מִשְׁמֵשׁ) 1) to press, squeeze.—Part. pass. מְמוּסְמָס mashed, shapeless. Num. R. s. 14 (play on מ̇שמ̇ר̇ו̇ת̇, Koh. XII, 10) בשעה שהם יוצאים מְ֗מוּסְ֗מָסִים הם מ̇ר̇ו̇ת̇ וכ׳ when they (the words of the Law) come out disfigured, they are bitter (drops) to those who hear them; v. מַס I; Y. Snh. X, 28ᵃ bot.—Nidd. 24ᵃ מי שפניו מוּסְמָסִים (מוּסְמָסִין) (= מְמוּ׳) a foetus whose face is mashed, contrad. to טוחות, v. טוּחַ I. —2) (cmp. אָמַץ) to press, urge, esp. (of medical treatment) to sustain vital energies. Gen. R. s. 82 כך מְמַסְמְסִין נפשה וכ׳ this is the way they stimulate the vital energy of the travailing woman; (Yalk. ib. 136 משיבין); Yalk. Is. 263 שמסמסין את החיה (corr. acc.).
