גַּחֶלֶת גַּחֶלֶת, burning coal. Bets. V, 5; Tosef. ib. IV, 7 הג׳ כרגלי וכ׳ if one takes burning coals from his neighbor on the Holy day, they may be carried only as far as the owner is permitted to go; contrad. to שלהבת. Y. Ber. VIII, 12ᵇ bot.; a. e.—Yeb. 63ᵇ כניצוץ מבעיר ג׳ (as dangerous) as a spark kindling coals. Ab. II, 10 והוי זהיר בגַחַלְתָּן וכ׳ take care of their (the scholars’) burning coals (do not treat them lightly) that thou mayest not be burnt. Gen. R. s. 78 end שלא נִכָּוֶה בגַחַלְתּוֹ וכ׳ (we are afraid) that we may be burnt by the coal of Jacob, i.e. come to grief through contact with a godly man.—Pl. גֶּחָלִים. Yoma IV, 3. Gen.
